Hearing the term, “Olympic Style Event,” can be intimidating. What many people do not realize is that these events are open to everyone. Athletes of any age and ability are encouraged to register and try their best. Here is some information about family and beginner events.

Fun for the whole family

Bowling

If you’re like me, your best bowling score is on Wii Sports. Every now and then though it can be fun to feel the weight of a real bowling ball instead of a plastic controller (and there is no risk of the bowling ball flying out of your hand and breaking your tv). You may just surprise yourself with how well you do. The whole family can have fun while trying to win a medal. Divisions are from youths 11 and under to seniors 55 and over. There are locations in the lower and upper peninsula, so you won’t have to worry about hearing, “Are we there yet?” numerous times over the course of a five hour drive. Registration is online and on-site. To learn more information please visit: https://www.stategamesofmichigan.com/bowling-winter

Beginner Friendly Events

Luge

If you enjoy sledding, then this one is for you. This event is perfect for individuals and families that are concerned about equipment and experience. Participants will learn on-site and be given a chance to go for gold. All equipment is provided and athletes will get 3-4 practice runs before they’re timed. Competitors then get to tell their friends and family that they went on the only full-length natural luge track in the United States! Snowshoe

Another option is to join the snowshoe races! If you need snowshoes, there are rental options. There are different event lengths ranging from 100m to a full 5k. All you have to do is put one foot in front of the other. Registration is online only, and ends February 8th at 11:59 p.m. For more information please visit: https://www.stategamesofmichigan.com/events/marquette/snowshoe2023
