Athlete Spotlight: Destin Oglesby

By Searrah Herendeen

Athlete Spotlights highlight athletes that are competing for the first time, or are a returning competitor. We want to showcase the diverse sports community the Meijer State Games of Michigan has helped create and grown with. Today’s Athlete Spotlight features Destin Oglesby, a returning Meijer State Winter Games athlete in the Grand Rapids area sport stacking competition.

About Destin:

So far there have only been a few registrations for sport stacking. That may change once the community hears about the competition. Destin is a 7th grader at Northridge Middle School.

He isn’t entering this competition alone either. His parent, Danielle will be joining him for her first competition in the Meijer State Games of Michigan Sport Stacking event!

Destin is part of big family of 5 brothers and his parents. In addition to sport stacking, Destin also enjoys playing baseball and wrestling. When he isn’t stacking he relaxes by hunting and fishing.

What are you looking forward to the most
during this competition?

Destin is determined to continue to improve and do better every time he picks up a cup. He is looking forward to, “Seeing my improvement from my last tournament.”

When/how did you get involved in sport stacking?

Some people may remember learning how to sport stack in gym class. Destin started learning in 2019 after watching his older brother compete for the first time. With five siblings there is bound to be competition.

How has sport impacted your family life?

Thanks to sport, his family has had travel opportunities that they might not have had otherwise. They have been given the opportunity to travel to multiple states for competitions.

What is a piece of advice you would give to others that are wanting to start competing?

Signing up is one of the first battles of entering a competition. Destin has some simple, yet strong advice for before, during, and after the competition.

“Don't give up. You won't be the fastest stacker out there when you start, the more you practice the faster you'll get.”

The Meijer State Games of Michigan is a multi-sport, Olympic-style event(s) that welcome athletes regardless of age or ability level. The Games embody the values of participation, sportsmanship and healthy living.
