What Sets the Meijer State Games of Michigan Hockey Tournament Apart
We’re not just your average tournament…
Whether you’re new or returning to us, the Meijer States Games of Michigan, and specifically the hockey tournament, is a completely unique player experience that continues to evolve every year!
The Meijer State Games of Michigan Hockey Tournament stands apart from any other tournament - not just because of the statewide representation, but because it’s a part of something much bigger! Being one pillar of Michigan’s only Olympic style, multi-sport showcase and competition, the hockey tournament gives its players, coaches, and parents a fully immersed and unique tournament experience.
Defining “Olympics-style”
The phrase “Olympic style” is frequently used to describe the Games as a whole, but what does that really mean? The Meijer State Games of Michigan is an overhead term for a variety of different sports, tournaments, and events happening in the same time frame. The hockey tournament itself is a large part of many different events in the games, giving athletes the opportunity to be a part of something more than just their sport!

As a part of the larger State Games, each hockey player is automatically invited to be a part of the game’s opening ceremony! Much like the real Olympics’ opening ceremony, athletes will have a parade, showing off what sport they’re representing, along with all of the other sports athletes. Fit with a ceremonial lighting of the torch, entertainment, brand appearances, and a real Olympian presenting the opening ceremony speech, our players kick off the tournament on an exciting, fun note, leading them into their tournament the following days.
Let’s Talk Hockey.
After the excitement of the opening ceremony, athletes will begin to focus on their own individual games! Over the weekend, gameday structures will be similar to a common hockey tournament - bracket style, winner take all!

What’s unique about us is the formation of our teams, with players representing their region of the state, dividing them into “districts” based off of their hometown. By doing this, players are able to meet other athletes outside of their team/club who are from the same general area with a shared goal - winning the tournament and proving to the state that their district has the best players in all of Michigan!
Overall…
In any sport, the Meijer State Games of Michigan is a unique and one-of-a-kind for both players and spectators alike, but our hockey tournament is truly something special. As one of the largest sports player pools in the whole Games, get ready for an immersive and exciting weekend filled with some new and familiar faces!
