Meijer State Games of Michigan Participant Wins Gold Medal at National DII Fencing Tournament
Meijer State Games of Michigan participant, Desree Ortega-Furgeson, took home a gold medal in women’s foil at the North American Cup (NAC) fencing event held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on December 8, 2012. The gold medal is Furgeson's first NAC Championship with her prior best finish being 6th place in the Detroit, Michigan NAC in 2010.
“This is one of the happiest moments of my life. It feels so good to see all my hard work paying off,” stated Furgeson.
Furgeson dropped only one pool bout early in the competition to a fencer from France before going undefeated for the rest of the day. Furgeson is led by head coach Mike Nemecek at West Michigan Fencing Academy in Grand Rapids and is also a senior and the team captain at Catholic Central High School Fencing Club.
Furgeson has competed in over 100 events throughout the United States including the Meijer State Games of Michigan. Since age 12, she has medaled in over 25 competitions. Furgeson is currently being recruited by several universities in the Midwest for NCAA participation.
